“So much of the work of oppression is policing the imagination.”
― Saidiya Hartman
The Projects/Space is a Black and woman-run arts space situated in the heart of Tucson, Arizona's Historic Warehouse Arts District. As a nonprofit space committed to fostering artistic expression and cultural enrichment, The Projects/Space exists to serve the public by providing an accessible and inclusive platform for BIPOC artists, allies, and the broader community to engage in meaningful creative experiences.
The Projects offers artists an opportunity to deepen their practice through dedicated two-month project residencies. This program is designed to empower artists to take bold risks and pursue innovative ideas without the constraints and pressures often associated with commercial art endeavors. By providing a supportive environment free from the expectations typically imposed by the art market, The Projects encourages experimentation and the development of new artistic expressions that contribute to the cultural vitality of Tucson and beyond.
The Space serves as an intimate venue dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art by local and regional artists. Through carefully curated exhibitions, The Space aims to highlight diverse artistic voices and provide a platform for underrepresented artists to showcase their work. The gallery also hosts artist talks, panel discussions, and community events that foster dialogue and deepen public appreciation for the arts. By bridging the gap between artists and audiences, The Space creates opportunities for learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
Together, The Projects/Space fulfill a critical public benefit by enhancing the cultural landscape of Tucson, supporting the professional growth of artists, and promoting arts accessibility for all members of the community. Our initiatives are rooted in a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that artistic expression remains a vital and enriching component of community life.
Through exhibitions, residencies, educational programming, and collaborative initiatives, The Projects/Space strive to inspire creativity, empower artists, and cultivate a dynamic arts ecosystem that contributes to the social and cultural well-being of the public. Our work is dedicated to enriching the community through the transformative power of art, making it an essential and accessible part of everyday life for all.
